THE public mood has grown to one of fear and anger.
This follows an application by Celtique Energie Weald for a temporary exploratory drilling well between Kirdford and Wisborough Green, submitted to West Sussex County Council (WSCC).
The document was made available to read on the council website on Friday, September 13.
A campaign group has since been set up in an attempt to fight the plans.
‘Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green’ was started by a group of concerned residents and businesses who are working together to object to the application.
A spokesman for the group said: “It will change the infrastructure of these two villages for ever and affect local businesses and wild life.
“This is one of more than 300 proposed sites in the south of England over the coming years, and yes we know it’s a contentious issue for the whole country, but we strongly believe this proposed site, which would be close to homes and businesses, is not suitable and highly inappropriate for exploratory drilling.
“After four months of anticipation, worry and concern the planning application has now been released for public consultation.
“At times this situation just seemed like a bad dream but to see it in black and white now is very disconcerting.
“This is your time to stand up and be counted.
“It wouldn’t be too controversial to suggest that we are generally a mild mannered and reserved bunch, as people tend to be if they enjoy the quality of rural living, but this is no time for hesitation or deference.
“If you value the local environment and peaceful surroundings and want to protect it then you have to write a letter!
“Remember, as Maximus said, “What we do in life echoes in eternity.”
“You can find out more on our website www.no-drilling.co.uk.”
Geoff Davies, chief executive officer at Celtique Energie said: “Now that the application has been submitted, we invite all members of the community who wish to make their views on our proposals known to get in touch with West Sussex County Council.”
A spokesman for Wisborough Green Parish Council said: “As the application has only just been made available, it will not be discussed in detail.
“A meeting will be called in a few week’s time, to allow councillors an opportunity to study the details.
“I’m not sure that there is very much more we can say at the moment.”
