Launch of Observer Task Force to unite community

Have you ever wondered how volunteers in your village are ever going to be able to band together to mend the hole in the roof of the community hall?

Is the garden of your local care home so overgrown you think it’ll never be used again?

Are there other community projects you’d love to see undertaken, if only you had the time and the band of helpers?

Never fear – help is at hand.

Today, we are launching the Observer Task Force. And we hope the whole community will get together to make it a massive success.

Already, Berkeley Homes has pledged support for our campaign, and its experts are on stand-by so we can make a real difference in YOUR community.

And staff and students at Chichester College are also ready to bound into action.

So how does the Task Force work?

It’s easy. Remember Challenge Anneka, the TV programme that saw the blonde bombshell race around the world to work in deprived areas to build new schools and new communities?

It’s a bit like that – but much, much more local.

We want YOU to nominate a project that needs sorting out. It could be your local children’s nursery, which is in desperate need of a lick of paint.

It could be that hole in the roof of the scout hut, which has always leaked and plays havoc with meetings.

It could be the local recreation ground, which is so overgrown no-one can play there any more.

We will assess every nomination we receive, and publish a shortlist of the best in the Observer. We will then ask readers to vote on the project which they believe is the most deserving.

Once that has been sorted, our Task Force will spring into action.

We want the Task Force to help make dreams come true for the next 12 months. And if helpers and businesses band together and the scheme is a huge success – then why stop after a year? Let’s make a difference to our communities for years to come!

Observer editor Colin Channon said: “If we can get volunteers and businesses together, there’s no limit to what can be achieved.

“We have already made a great start. In Berkeley Homes and Chichester College, we have a number of experts in many fields we can call upon – and a very willing band of volunteers.

“I hope businesses will now get into the spirit and sign up to become involved, so we can contact them as and when necessary. We can make a real difference in the community if we all pull together.”

What now?

We want YOU to nominate a project that our Task Force can get their teeth into. Remember, it must be something reasonable – unlike Anneka Rice, we can’t fly in by helicopter and build a whole new community! Email [email protected] or write to: Task Force, The Observer, Unicorn House, 8 Eastgate Square, Chichester, PO19 1JN.

And businesses – let us know if YOU want to help. We’ll add your name to our roll of honour, and then call on you when your expertise and field of knowledge can help, and you may be able to offer materials to help a community’s dream come true.
