The panels have been fitted on the activity shed which have added a whole new dimension to the operation of the garden.

And yesterday (Tuesday, October 4) volunteers and members threw open the garden gates to welcome members of the public in and show them what the new addition has meant to them.

Community garden co-ordinator Kate Brickell told the Observer: “This ‘sustainable sunlight’ project has kindly been funded by West Sussex County Council’s north area county local committee, members of Petworth Town Council and the South Downs National Park’s Sustainable Communities Fund.

“Solar panels on the community gardens activity shed have been installed along with a clever system from Circuitree Ltd, generating enough electricity to power lights and power sockets for a projector, tools, a heater and a kettle throughout the year, all from the sun!

“This will make an enormous difference to our projects,” said Kate: “we can run our projects throughout the winter with safe heat and lights, we can power tools for the Mens Shed project and extend our teaching reach completely.

“Now we have the use of a projector we can show presentations and give organic gardening sessions tailored towards the whole community. We are also very exited to be able to showcase the amazing technology of renewable energy.”

She added: “We are so very grateful to all our supporters and funders for helping to make this such a successful project, and look forward to enjoying clean sustainable energy from the sun.

Voting, which could see the community garden receive a share of Tesco’s ‘Bags of Help’ funding towards its ‘access all areas’ project, has been delayed. It will now take place in Tesco stores from October 31-November 13.
