Lions organise day trip for local residents

"PLEASANT memories of when I used to walk over the Downs", "The Sussex countryside makes you proud to be British", "My first outing for 3 years".

These were just some of the comments from the guests of Bexhill Lions Club during a coach trip into the beautiful local countryside and coastal area.

Ken Rushbrooke, who heads the Lions Community Services group, said the trip gave residents who may not venture out that often the chance to not only experience some of the scenic views the locality has to offer, but to get out of their homes to socialising with other like-minded folk.

Ken said: "The outing was arranged to provide some of the more mature local residents with the opportunity to get out of their home for a while, to meet and chat with others, and to experience the local countryside.

"We know from our own activities, and our contacts with other local organisations, that there are many elderly people in Bexhill who rarely have the chance to get out and about, either because of restricted mobility or simply the lack of driving friends or relations able to take them out, so we like to help where we can."

The outing took the guests into the countryside around Bexhill, then through the Downs, arriving at Birling Gap for a much appreciated Cream Tea featuring tasty home made scones.

Ken added: "Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and we thank all who helped make it a success '“ Bexhill Caring Community bus driver Peter Hemsworth, Sue Williams the driver from Empress Coaches, Howard Collins and staff at the Birling Gap Hotel, Lion Danny Nicolle and wife Cindy, Lion Ron Moore and wife Sally, and especially the two dozen guests who made the whole experience so enjoyable for all."
