Littlehampton northern link set to open in 2017

AFTER more than six decades of waiting, a new link road northwards out of Littlehampton could be open within four years.

Town councillors have welcomed a county council document setting out a comprehensive timetable for construction of the Fitzalan Road extension, continuing as the Lyminster bypass. It even gives a start date – June 26, 2017.

Councillor Dr James Walsh referred to the report at Thursday’s full town council meeting.

He said: “At last, the county council has grasped the concept of the road being completed as one project and not ending up, as it seemed it might at one stage, in a cul-de-sac. The only remaining task is to fund the remaining finance, and that gap is now closing.”

Town and Arun councillor Mike Northeast, a member of the North Littlehampton Steering Group which has been negotiating with developers, said: “I’m pleased to see finally a way forward and completion date for the Lyminster bypass.

“After years of negotiating, it is good to be able to see the start of something that will potentially have a very positive effect, giving a road network the commercial sector has been telling us it needed to attract new business, hopefully bringing new jobs and also an easier route to the beach.”
