MAGGOTS AND MOUSE DROPPINGS FOUND AT SHOP

A BUSINESSMAN whose failure to control pests resulted in maggots and mouse droppings at his shop in Worthing has been sentenced to 300 hours' community service.

Nazrul Rahman, of Raja Cash and Carry at 4 Dominion Buildings, Broadwater, was also ordered to pay the full prosecution costs of 4,230 at Worthing Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Rahman, who was the owner of the store at the time of the offences, pleaded guilty to nine food hygiene offences and one trading standards offence.

These related to the disposal of animal by-products following inspections by environmental health and trading standards officers in September, 2006.

They found blue bottles and house flies in a variety of stages, including maggots, chrysalis and flies, plus evidence of mouse droppings on shelves and on food packaging and a gnawed UHT milk carton.

There were no receptacles for the collection of waste and no evidence of waste being disposed of correctly, resulting in piles of food waste being stored inside the walk-in freezer next to food available for sale.
