Mkembers of the cabinet, who met on Tuesday were recommended by their officers to support Petworth Town Council’s application for a skate park on district council land at the youth centre subject to planning permission.

But they said while they supported a skate park in the town they had safety issues. They have asked the town council to explore new locations or look at an alternative youth provision – not wheeled sports – in the youth centre car park.

Town council skate park project leader Roger Hanauer said: “I was very disappointed and angry. I don’t think democracy has worked here. No-one had the common decency to alert us to the fact they had changed their recommendation.

“I could have answered all their rebuttals.”
