Man killed himself with rifle

A man who shot himself outside a house in Southover High Street, Lewes, last night (Tuesday) used a rifle.

At a police press conference outside the house today (Wednesday) detectives confirmed police were not able to talk to him before he took his life.

Two police officers and two PCSOs went to the house after receiving a report of an intruder.

But as soon as the first officer opened a gate to a passageway at the side of the house the man picked up a rifle and shot himself in the head.

The man was from the Avon and Somerset area.

The Express understands he drove to Lewes yesterday and at around 7.20pm began harassing a women who lives at Fair Hall.

The 36-year-old man had earlier been seen by residents throwing something over the wall of the house and is thought to then have climbed over the wall.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene but later died in hospital.
