Man killed on railway level crossing

A MAN has died after being hit by a train at Southease level crossing, near Lewes.

The accident happened at around 1.14pm today (Friday) at the unmanned crossing.

The 54 year-old man from Newhaven was struck by the 12.40pm Brighton to Seaford train and was declared dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the service was approaching Southease station when a man was seen on the track.

There were around 40 passengers on the train at the time.

Officers from the British Transport Police are working to contact the man's next of kin and said they are not treating it as suspicious.

Trains from Brighton to Seaford were terminating at Lewes.

A bus was picking up passengers so they could continue their journey.
