Patient airlifted to hospital after serious multi-vehicle crash on A272

The A272 at Rogate is currently closed following the crash involving a light goods vehicle, a 4X4 and a horsebox shortly after 12pm.

Firefighters were called to free a person, who had become trapped after the serious crash.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Firefighters from Midhurst Fire Station are currently on scene with officers from our Technical Rescue Unit and Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service crews from Petersfield and Cosham, alongside Sussex Police, paramedics from SECAmb and HEMS.

“Upon arrival crews discovered a collision involving a light goods vehicle, a 4X4 and a horse box.

“One person was trapped in the LGV, and firefighters got to work using hydraulic cutting equipment to free them from the vehicle.”

In an update at 2.45pm, the fire service spokesperson said: “All of our crews have now left the scene of this incident, but the A272 near Durford Abbey Lodge is expected to remain closed in both directions for some time yet.

“Please continue to avoid the area.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service said paramedics were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service and crews from South Central Ambulance Service.

A spokesman said: “Two patients have been treated at the scene and a further patient is being airlifted to Royal Sussex County Hospital with potentially serious injuries.”

The road is closed both ways from the Midhurst turn-off to Slade Lane but traffic is now said to be coping well.
