Midhurst and Petworth residents urged to back broadband bid

RESIDENTS and businesses across Midhurst and Petworth are being urged to register their support for faster broadband in their area.

Members of the public attending the latest meeting of the North Chichester County Local Committee held in Duncton heard a presentation from Business Change consultant Tim Ratledge of West Sussex County Council, which is embarking on a project to deliver a better service to those areas which are not currently served by commercial companies.

The Better Connected project will be working with various organisations to provide better infrastructure.

Mr Ratledge said many parts of the county did not have meaningful broadband and West Sussex was home to around four exchanges which still relied on a dial-up connection.

He said the aim was to reduce the divide for those communities which had been left behind by purely commercial solutions.

The project aims to deliver superfast broadband to 90 per cent of the county by April 2015, with a minimum speed of two megabytes per second across harder to reach areas, using grants from the government.

Mr Ratledge urged everyone to register their interest as the more demand was shown, the more could be done.
