Cyril Robert, 94, was born in Devizes in Wiltshire, while Marjory, 93, was born in Glasgow.

They met when they were both serving in the RAF during the Second World War.

Marjory, who was a medic, explained: “He was our training instructor.”

They married at Marlborough House in Glasgow on September 27, 1945, and when they came out of the RAF, Cyril Robert became an executive in the civil service.

“We travelled all over the place, starting in Aden and then South Africa,” said Marjory.

“It was absolutely wonderful. We did so many things. We have had a lovely life. The wedding doesn’t seem 70 years ago.”

She particularly remembers seeing the Foreign Legion march past every morning at 10am and their safari in Kenya. But she said they had spent so many years in the Middle East that she had never learned to drive, as that was not something women did over there.

The couple have three daughters, Kathy, Jennifer and Allison, and all three have also travelled to different parts of the world.

“We are a wandering family,” smiled Marjory.

The couple eventually moved to Midhurst to be near Jennifer.

Marjory said: “When families are scattered and you get older, other people have grandchildren and they have put down roots, but we had never done that until we eventually put down roots in Midhurst.”

The couple celebrated their anniversary by having a meal with friends, rather than a party. Marjory said they chose this because they had had big celebrations for both their golden and diamond wedding anniversaries.

Kathy, who lives in Armidale, Australia, sent 70 roses to mark the special occasion and the couple were also delighted to receive a 70th wedding anniversary congratulations message from the Queen.

The date of their wedding anniversary has taken on even greater significance over the years, as Jennifer, Kathy and one of their seven grandchildren were all born the same day, while Marjory’s birthday is the next day.
