A MIDHURST vet is recovering after a gruelling challenge battling the elements with two other vets – and a dentist.

Director at the Springfield Veterinary Surgery in Lamberts Lane, Charles Williams, took part in
the Scottish Islands Peaks Race in aid of charities Canine Partners and ‘We are mad 4 Africa’.

Runner Charles competed alongside skipper Julian Wells, navigator Tim Phillips, first mate John Sparrow and runner
Rod Welford.

The ‘Stormforce’ team battled poor weather conditions in their soaking-wet kit, with gale-force wind and rain causing them to lose their bearings at one point in the race.

“Sadly we ran out of time to complete the course owing to our collective work commitments. The weather beat us,” said Charles.

“Race organisers informed us the weather had been the worst for three decades. I can believe it.

“For the 19 teams that completed out of 44 entries – well done.

“It was well worth the challenge, particularly as we did it in aid of two fantastic local charities.

“Canine Partners I work closely with in my veterinary capacity and see at firsthand the wonderful difference an assistance dog makes to the life of the disabled person it assists.

“We are mad 4 Africa is run by the family of one of my veterinary nurses and provides help to a poor community in Gambia.

“Their funds are spent carefully and wisely and I know every pound they raise makes a huge difference.

“I estimate we have raised about £1,500 so far.

“I did repeat the mantra ‘never again’ as I floundered in Scottish bogs, battered by the wind and rain.

“But memories of suffering soon give way to the pleasure of achievement.

“And since we didn’t finish... perhaps never again next time.”
