Milland artists open their studios

This summer sees something new in Milland when for the first time, artists and craftspeople in the village have got together to join an Open Studios Event.

A group of people are opening their studios and houses to art lovers and have been invited to join the Surrey Artists Open Studios (SAOS) events today (Saturday,June 10) and tomorrow Sunday June 11 and next weekend from June 16-18 from 11am-5pm.

SAOS booklets detailing all the studios in and around Surrey are available from libraries, shops and cafes around the county.

A map shows the trail to see all five studios in the Milland valley. Visitors can enjoy not only the art but also the other delights on offer, such as The Rising Sun, Milland Stores and Cafe and The Wildflower Meadow and any events going on.

The Milland trail will include Milland Pottery (Studio 87) run by Angela who specialises in colourful earthenware pots made on the potter’s wheel. She also runs classes which may be in progress when visiting.  The space will be shared by Robin Quinnell who will be selling her pet portraits and handmade cards of wildlife, local landscapes and farming scenes.

A short walk from the Pottery will take you to Milland Farmhouse (Studio 88) and to Su Jameson’s studio. Su will be showing her strong ceramic sculptures for the very first time. In the studio with Su, will be Melissa Hillman, painter in oils of landscapes and interiors. Melissa will also be exhibiting her wooden panels featuring pheasants, fish and hares. Landscape photographer Gabriel Monks will also be showing his work in Su’s studio.  

In the centre of the village at Thornville, Sue Hoar (Studio 92)will be displaying her colourful abstracts and expressionist paintings. Kim Hoar’s paintings will also be on display as well as her decorative and useful textiles made from upcycled materials.

The third studio is at Campbell Park where Audrey (Studio 93) will be showing her lively and eclectic paintings, drawings and sculpture, many inspired by her childhood in The African Bush. For the purpose of Open Studios she is sharing with Russell Cobb (Studio 90), a newcomer to the valley. Russell has won many awards as one of the top ten artist illustrators in the country and his work is colourful and unique.  

The final studio is a little way south of the village on Iping Lane. Moor House Studio belongs to Gail Clarke-Hall (Studio 89) who hand- builds sculptural ceramic pots.

Showing with Gail is Hilary Charlesworth, a weaver who will be exhibiting her beautiful colourful rugs, wall hangings and tapestries,

As there is limited parking, it might be more enjoyable to park on the road and walk.
