OVER THE TOP: Michael Mayers writes with news on the recent resurfacing of Solomon’s Lane: “About 9.00 this morning (August 12th), we were looking out of our lounge window towards the lane and the rain when a very large tractor and high sided trailer driving towards the Old Bakery for no apparent reason made an emergency stop right outside our front garden. The result was a tsunami of rotting tropical fruit consisting of oranges, lemons, pineapples, grapes and avocados came in a double wave over the top of the trailer, hit the tractor cab, and in excess of a half a ton of fruit cocktail slid onto the road! It smelt very nice, like hot marmalade — and just as sticky. Apparently a van coming at speed in the opposite direction had forced the tractor into an emergency stop and then, according to the driver of the tractor, made a hasty reverse back down the lane and was gone. It took us about an hour and a half to get the sludge back into the trailer via a ladder and several buckets with me shovelling and the driver going up and down the ladder. Of course, the road was blocked for this period. What excitement we experience living in Mountfield.”

VAL MILES: You would have been forgiven for thinking that a garden party was about to take place. Val had asked everyone to wear cheerful colours at her funeral, not black, and for flowers to be either from the garden or wild. Everyone went along with her wishes and she was given a lovely send off at a simple, non-religious service. We send our love to Clare and the family and to Val’s friends.

MACMILLAN: On September 2nd. Merriments Gardens will be open in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support from 10.00 am – 5.30 pm. Admissionwill be £7.00, children free. This is a very worthwhile charity and funds are desperately needed. Every penny raised on the day will go to the charity.

TREASURE HUNT: A reminder that Mountfield Club are running a car treasure hunt on Saturday September 12th, with starting times between 5.00 and 6.00 pm. Weather permitting, there will be a BBQ for those who make it back to base. Entry is just £5.00 per car. This was a great success last year. To enter, just give Glenn a call on 07917 752576.

REMINDERS: Just a reminder for all walkers and riders about the Ride/Walk that will take place on Saturday September 19th with setting out any time between 9.30 and 12.30. The full distance is approximately 10 miles but there are opportunities to shorten the route according to fitness levels. In the event of very bad weather, the ride will take place in the Village Hall. Entry forms, prices, etc are available from your Village Voices.

FINALLY: We are over half way through the holiday season in Butters Cottage, our self-catering holiday cottage and, as ever, particularly after having done it for fourteen years now, we do become a little jaded and have trouble remembering who the previous week’s guest were. We have had our usual predominance of German and Dutch guests — both of which we particularly enjoy for the respect they show to the cottage and to our efforts on their behalf. But the other week we had our very first Swiss guests — and a lovely surprise. They arrived late after a long, long drive across Europe. We got them settled in and sat down wearily to our dinner when, they all trooped along our front path and knocked on the door. Of course, we assumed something had gone disastrously wrong but it turned out that they simply wanted to present us with a small hamper of choice local Swiss produce: different types of artisan chocolate, biscuits, patisseries, cheese, etc. We have often had the odd jar of honey, bottle of local wine or special beers from our overseas guests but never a hamper before.

CONTACT: One detail of news. There had been complaints about the public right of way between, Castle Farm and Mountfield Court. The Court have done a splendid job of opening the path up again.
