Moves to extend railway path to Midhurst

Calls have been made for an extension to the public path which follows the route of the old Chichester to Midhurst railway line.

Former town councillor Peter Field has asked the council to support a plea to bring the trail further north into the town.

The South Downs National Park recently extended the Centurion Way with a 2.5km stretch of new and improved path from Chichester to West Dean.

For the time being that trail ends with information panels at West Dean tunnel, telling the story of the old railway line.

But said Mr Field: “It would be so good for Midhurst’s economy if we can get this trail to Midhurst.

“It would bring walkers and cyclists to Midhurst and create benefit to the town’s economy.”

He said with the headquarters of the South Downs National Park being in Midhurst it would be a good project for the park to undertake.

“I can tell you,” he said, “that the national park is thinking of extending the Centurion Way again firstly to the South Downs pathway above Cocking.

Asking the town council to support pressure from Midhurst Area Cycling he said: “It would be very said if Midhurst didn’t figure in the trail, because really it ought to be the centre of it.”

He said there were lovely views from the path and it was safe for families.
