MP Nick Herbert gives backing to Slindon farmers' market

A farmers' market in Slindon has received the backing of its MP.

About a dozen stallholders turn out every month with a variety of local produce such as meat, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as greetings cards and gifts, plants and flowers.

The market is held from 9am to midday on the last Thursday of each month at the Coronation Hall in Reynolds Lane.

Among the visitors to the latest of the monthly occasions was Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert.

Mr Herbert, the Conservatives' shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, met the market's organiser and chairman of Slindon Life, Mike Imms, to talk about the future of the market and its continued reliance on the support of the local community.

Mr Imms said: "The village farmers' market has a great atmosphere. When you're there, you really experience the best of a thriving, sociable village community.

"And you get to see people. I've chatted today to neighbours I haven't seen for months.

"Of course, it's not perfect. There would be a wider range of goods and keener prices in an ideal world.

"But, in the absence of a village shop and with very little resources, we feel we put on a good show that people certainly seem to appreciate."

He said he was delighted with Mr Herbert's show of approval.

Mr Herbert commented: "I enjoyed my visit to the farmers' market in Slindon. I hope it will keep going.

"After the loss of the shop, post office and pub in the village, it provides a nice opportunity for local residents to get together.

"I really hope the community will continue to support it."
