MP relieved over safety barrier

TOWN MP Greg Barker spoke of his "relief and satisfaction" at seeing the long over-due roadside barriers at King Offa Way in place.

The new steel rails have been installed by the Highways Agency after three death crashes within the last two years.

It follows an Observer campaign, backed by the MP and Rother leader Cllr Graham Gubby, that pressed the case for better safety measures to Transport Minister Tony McNulty last December.

The Highways Agency has also said it will install a speed camera on the notorious stretch of road, in October.

Mr Barker was delighted to see the new barriers protecting pedestrians and the residents of Gilbert House, below the road.

He said: "There is a huge sense of relief and satisfaction, because seeing them in place makes you wonder how we managed for so long without them.

"It's such an obvious safety improvement which I'm sure will aid the piece of mind of local residents alongside the carriageways, but also, should there be another accident, help to save the lives of motorists."

The MP is also keen to see a speed camera in place on the carriageway.

He added: "We have seen today there is still excessive speed.

"A speed camera will help to keep the excessive speeding under control."
