Station Officer Dick Rowsell and Coastguard Rescue Officers Gary Tidman and Steven Bradley carried out the necessary duties. These involve securing, measuring and recording the condition of the creature.

Gary Tidman said: "Porpoises are classed as 'Royal Fish' and therefore must have their details recorded for Receiver of Wreck who in turn advise the Natural History Museum who analyse and monitor such tragic events.

"'Royal Fish' which also include whales, dolphins and sturgeon if found, either dead or alive must be reported to the Coastguard. The public should remember to keep a safe distance away, dial 999 and ask for 'The Coastguard.'"

The carcass' removal was organised by Rother.
