National Park wrongly labels Midhurst a former ‘Saxon manor’

Based in Midhurst, the SDNPA has been asked to correct a submission in its draft local plan that states: “Midhurst has been shaped by its trading activities over the centuries. Originally a Saxon manor with a market that served the surrounding agricultural settlements, it developed in medieval times into a prosperous trading centre.

“Stalls in the market turned into more permanent shops and trade was further increased through the town’s role as a place of pilgrimage and its position straddling routes to shrines in Chichester and Winchester.”

The SDNPA is seeking comments on the plan and in among a range of other suggestions, the council is planning to say: “Midhurst was not a Saxon manor. It was not a place of pilgrimage. This section should be rewritten.”

The council is also expected to criticise the ‘relatively weak’ policies in the plan on the historic environment and built heritage.
