WILDFLOWERS: Nominated sites for wildflowers are: Malling Rec, Convent Field, Winterbourne, The Gallops, and Landport Rec. Thanks to the District Council for putting them on their management plan. Also some roadside verges, and we're still hoping that the County Council might agree to. Please can you let me know which of these things you want to do? Wildflower Lewes Steering group advise the project (on ecology or any other expertise) and/or help fundraise (we don't need masses but we'd like to apply for some small funds for signs), and/or take on any of the key roles of chair, treasurer and secretary. Wildflower Lewes Champions are volunteers who would like to help plant flowers, sow seeds, weed patches, take pictures and record the sites as they growÂ let me know. If you just want to be on an email list for information and maybe volunteer at a later date. The time commitment is quite flexible. The steering group have monthly meetings on second Monday of the month, different people have come to each meeting, so it is flexible depending on what role you would like to play. You can also give advice via email. Tell me what you offer. The first days of planting will be in March, then hopefully there will be a group of five or so volunteers for each patch, so it will hopefully be quite easy to keep on top of a small area. The District Council contractors, Burleys, have kindly offered to give some training and support to groups who want to look after Wildflower Lewes sites. The first dates for preparing the patches, planting plugs or seeds, will be at the end of March. WALLANDS SCHOOL: Junior Choir members were treated to the first of three singing workshops with Lee Reynolds who is a former Wallands pupil and conducts in the UK’s major opera houses and concert halls and is also a founder of the Kantanti Ensemble orchestra. Wallands Junior Choir will be joining Kantanti and other young performers at Lewes Town Hall on April 30, for two performances of The Best of Orchestral Broadway. Book now for an unmissable evening of highlights from the golden age of musical theatre. The choir also received a cheque this week, from the New Sussex Singers. This donation was made in recognition of the choir’s wonderful contribution to the New Sussex Singers’ Christmas Concert in early December. Thank you, New Sussex Singers, and well done Junior Choir. Our children competed at the Sussex School Games Primary School Cross Country Finals at Hickstead on the first Saturday of half term. It was a fantastic effort from all of the runners in very cold conditions. There were over 100 runners in both the boys and girls races from across Sussex and all the children had gone through at least two previous rounds to get to the County finals. Particular congratulations to our South Downs Boys team, who were third overall (out of the nine School Games Areas) and bronze medallists. A huge well done to those children.

ST MARY’S SUPPORTERS CLUB: Bingo tonight, Friday, with eyes down at 8.30pm. Cash prizes and raffle. Saturday March 18 there will be a Shadows tribute band. Everyone welcome; non members £1 entrance fee.

CHRIST CHURCH: At the meeting of the Thinktank on February 22, 60 people heard a fascinating talk by Dr Roger Cockrell on Dostoevsky and the Modern World. With the help of well-chosen quotations distributed in handouts, he convincingly showed how the nineteenth century Russian novelist provided insights into issues that are still important today. Christ Church Tots have another programme of activities for pre-school children and their carers today (Friday), running from 9.30am to 11.30am. Also on Friday, some of our members will be attending the Women’s World Day of Prayer service at Trinity Church in Southover at 11am. Our Sunday morning worship on March 5 will be led by Rev Geoffrey Whitfield and begins at 10.30am. All are welcome. Lent began last Wednesday. During Lent, there will be two study courses available: one at St Anne’s Church on Tuesday mornings (beginning on March 7 at 10.30am) and one on Thursday evenings at Christ Church (beginning on March 9 at 7.30pm). Again, all are welcome for study and discussion. Lastly, our church council meets on March 8 to discuss a full agenda of church business. This will include discussion of our priorities and action plan for the coming year , with more initiatives for work in the local community.
