DINERS in Petworth can now sit back and enjoy a history, geography, or economy lesson as they eat their lunch.

Richard Luna, manager of The Leconfield, recently became sommelier certified by the UK and Worldwide Sommelier Association.

Richard earned his diploma by attending the intense course in London, which covers a full range of skills required of a sommelier.

So anyone who would like to learn more about their chilled glass of Prosecco, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurtztraminer Gestz or Le Fume Blanc Lurton – Richard will be happy to educate on the origins of the beverage and the dish to which it is best suited.

As a certified wine expert, he is now a specialist in all aspects of wine service from history of the old and new world wines, geography, economy, the impact of grape growing as well as food pairing, having the knowledge to suggest wines that will best compliment each particular food item.

Richard said: “The course enables you to try wines and to build a library of aromas in your brain.

“The relationship between food and wine is complex, paired correctly, wine complements food and raises our appreciation of the flavours.”

Richard’s training comes as the Leconfield adds exciting new wines to its menu and with Richard’s extended knowledge, he would be happy to pass on his wisdom and advise on the best choice possible to compliment a meal. Voted by The Times as one of the best 30 places for Sunday lunch in the UK, The Leconfield also features in the Michelin restaurant guide.

It was voted the Best Place to Eat in West Sussex at the Observer and Gazette Business Awards 2013.

It has also recently launched its Bites Y Pinchos menu.

Served from midday-2pm and 6pm-8pm in the bar area or courtyard garden, the menu is inspired by the Spanish tapas menus but draws on influences from regions around the world.

The Leconfield Restaurant and Bar is located on New Street.

It is open for lunch and dinner service from Tuesday-Saturday, and lunch only on Sundays.
