The project has been more than a year in the pipeline after traders approached the town council to set up a joint group to extend and replace the Christmas lights and revamp the street party.

The new lights extend the length of North Street and also feature in West Street.

Last year town councillors set aside £13,2000 to replace the lights and together with some extra funding from the Town Team the working party set about choosing designs.

The red and white lights in North Street are animated to sparkle and in West Street white rope lighting has been strung along the outline of the historic buildings to complement the familiar lit Christmas trees: “This is a great demonstration of the town council working closely with community groups such as the Town Team to deliver great things for the community,” said chairman of the town council Mark Purves.

Tomorrow night the new-look Christmas street party will welcome visitors: “We have kept the same philosophy of providing a free festive event for the whole community,” said Mark “and the traditional elements are still there, but we have realigned the focus to ensure its more orientated on the community.”

There is entertainment from Midhurst musicians and carol singing from children at Conifers, Easebourne and Midhurst Primary Schools. At 6.30pm Lord and Lady Cowdray will switch on the lights on the Christmas tree in Market Square which was provided by the Cowdray Estate to the Town Trust which owns the square.

There will be late night shopping, Father Christmas will be at the West Street studio of hairdresser Martyn Chevis and there will be craft stalls in the Old Library: “We hope this will be a very special evening and are grateful for the support from traders who have helped organise it and sponsor the entertainment,” said Mark.
