New compound for Lidsey landfill site

A new compound is planned to cope with the amount of rubbish being left at the Lidsey landfill site.

Its operator, Lidsey Landfill Ltd, has applied for planning permission to move the existing leachate storage compound.

The proposed compound will have a storage tank area of about 420sq m to cope with the liquid which percolates out of the refuse placed in the landfill on Lidsey Road.

It will comprise three interlinked leachate tanks – compared to the existing single tank – and an associated pump control building.

A statement by the company’s planning agent, Caulmert engineering, environmental planning consultancy services, says: “Leachate is removed from each landfill cell – currently 34 cells – pumped to temporary storage tanks and is discharged at a rate of up to 24 cubic metres a day via a private purpose-built sewer to the Southern Water sewage treatment works at Lidsey, where it is treated along with sewer effluent.

“The discharge of leachate is an essential requirement of the landfill operations and environmental permit for the site.

“The pumping of leachate from the Lidsey site is expected to continue for about 13 years following the closure of landfill operations, up to December 1, 2025.”

The proposed compound is intended to be sited next to the entrance and will be in a well-screened area unable to be seen beyond the boundary.

A landscaped bund will screen it from the public footpath which runs along the eastern boundary of the proposed site area.

The statement says the site’s liaison group of representatives of the local community raised no objections to the plan.
