New look to Devonshire Square

WORK on the new boulevard-style Devonshire Square is virtually finished save for new lighting columns.

The production of the antique-style cast iron lights has been delayed and it's hoped to have them installed in the next few weeks.

The square is now barely recognisable from three months ago, when it was still essentially a car park with a bus stop and a taxi rank.

Members of the public have complained about the loss of parking but few can argue the changes are an aesthetic improvement.

The newly-surface road sweeps in an arc through the centre of the square, separated from the new pedestrian areas by large sphere-shaped concrete bollards.

Work is also afoot to remove the large hoardings on the railway line side of the square, which are considered an eyesore.

The council's vision is that come spring time the square will be an exhaust-fume free public space for residents to relax in. Judging by this week's weather we could be waiting quite a few months!
