New pothole mystery on Midhurst's '˜sinking' road

A Midhurst couple say they are at the end of their tether after a four-month pothole nightmare which brings rain water flooding into their home.

A huge pothole has appeared outside their house at Egmont Mews, Rumbolds Hill, and when cars hit it in wet weather, it sends water cascading against their front door, through the letter box and under the door, leaving puddles in their hallway.

“We have to block the letter box and put newspaper down in the hall,” said Neil Piggott. “The water has already rusted the deadlock in the door and is rotting our door and window frames.

“We have contacted West Sussex County Council so many times but they are a waste of time and we never get any satisfactory response from them. They never do any adequate repairs. The potholes all over Rumbolds Hill just keep reappearing.

“Apart from the water,” he added, “potholes are dangerous and I have told West Sussex County Council (WSCC) if anyone is hurt I will be a witness in a court of law to say I kept reporting them and they didn’t do anything about it.”

He reported reoccurring potholes a year ago: “They came quite quickly because they were such a hazard. Then a very big one appeared outside our front door. One day my wife opened the door when a lorry was passing and she got soaked from head to foot. The whole thing is really getting us down.”

It was eventually filled but another appeared beside it: “We reported it, but nobody did anything. They have only just acknowledged us now saying it is on a list to be filled. They have been promising to resurface for ages, but I think they are too terrified of what they might find underneath.”

A WSCC spokesman said: “The road will be reconstructed in the 2017/18 financial year. We are undertaking tests to make sure we construct the best solution. In the meantime it will be regularly inspected and maintained to keep it in a safe and roadworthy condition.”
