New role for former Petworth school

Plans to give the former Herbert Shiner Intermediate School at Petworth a new lease of life are well under way.

Groups in the town led by the Petworth and District Community Association are in the final stages of turning the old school into a community centre.

As part of the preparations for taking on the running of the building, the community association is holding a special general meeting so it can become a ‘company limited by guarantee’.

“The community association will still be a charity,” said its chairman Tony Sneller, “but this registration will enable us to take on the considerable responsibility of managing these important facilities.”

The meeting will be in the small hall at the centre at 7pm on September 27 when wine and refreshments will be served.

“There will be an opportunity to look at the facilities available, and to hear the exciting plans to make sure the building remains available for community use,” he added
