NEW WING PLANNED FOR PRISON

LEWES Prison is set to radically expand.

A new inmates' wing could be built at the western end of the Victorian listed jail, which opened in 1853.

A new planning application has been submitted to Lewes District Council.

The new 'house block' will enable the prison to increase its 558 population, in line with Government policy to find more cells for the nation's ever-growing prison population.

Some 150 more prisoners will be accommodated
