So after Pancake Day comes..?: Ash Wednesday; aka the first day of Lent...and the question is, in Shakespearian terms.. To Give Up or Not To Give Up? Well, I have to say, I have proudly watched Esteemed Mama over the years womanfully give up Chocolate completely, for the entire 40 days...actually longer, because Lent covers 40 days without Sundays, and that giving up of Chocolate includes Biscuits, Cakes...in fact anything that might have even a hint or whiff of chocolate! It is normally purgatory...she suffers, daily!...but she is always a shining example of the true meaning of the practice, with Lent being a time of self-denial, moderation and fasting. Ash Wednesday heralds the commencement of a period of spiritual discipline, although there is no mandatory observation in the Bible, no command to, or condemnation if no;- it is down to the individual as to how they wish to perceive the marking of Lent. So, back to the original question- To give up or not to give up? I applaud E.M, her strength is phenominal; I haven't given up anything specific like she always does; but I think I will try and echo my New Years Resolution, and give up Negativity as far as possible, and take on more Positivity, generally; Pollyanna style if necessary! (so what's new some of you say!) The days are getting longer, spring is on it's way, and when it comes to celebrations.. well, my glass, from now on, will always be half full!! Any Excuse..!

Hooe Parish Council: Saturday 4th March, the Great British Spring Clean comes to Hooe and the event starts at 10am, with everyone invited to meet on the car park of the Red Lion Pub. All are welcome, the more the merrier, and it is hoped that there will be the same amount of enthusiasm as the Clean for the Queen Day last year. Please bring some bright clothing, a litter picker if you have one, some gloves and, most importantly...a sense of humour and a few coins for a well deserved pint in the Pub afterwards!

Ninfield Flower Group: On Monday March 6th, from 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, the Flower Group will welcome Graham King with his demonstration entitled..’I’ve had an Idea..’! Everyone is very welcome to attend, with visitors being charged a minimal £4 entry fee which includes all light refreshments. All flowers used for the demonstration will be raffled off at the end of the evening, so there is never any waste, just an array of beautiful blooms to take home and admire! Also - On Saturday 11th March, the Group will hold one of their infamous Jumble Sales at the Memorial Hall, with doors opening at 2pm and a charge of just 50p for entry. There will be lots of bargains, and also some light refreshments and a cake stall to help you relax for a minute while you browse!! Ninfield Carnival Association: The next meeting is on Wednesday 8th March, starting at 8.30pm, in the Working Men’s Club, and there will be, no doubt, some more lively discussions on all this year’s forthcoming events! Firstly, the Charity Auction, to be held in the Memorial Hall, on Saturday 29th April. The morning will be set aside for viewing all the items for sale- all of which will have been donated, with the proceeds going to the Carnival and the Charity RaDAR - Rural Dementia Action Research. The actual Auction will take place in the afternoon.. times and final details to be confirmed at the meeting on the 8th! The next event on the agenda will be The Wacky Races, to be held on the last Bank Holiday Sunday in May, 28th, in the Blacksmiths Car Park and along Manchester Road. The Bbq, Tote and Raffle stalls will be in situ, and there is a real emphasis on Fancy Dress and Home Made Vehicles this time, to reflect the theme - Fads of Transport through the Ages. The main events, The Carnival Weekend, on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th July, will have further updates, and there are lots of fantastic new ideas coming to fruition. The Friday evening Entertainment will be a Big Barn Dance- great fun for all ages! and the Saturday Night in the Marquee will see ‘The Normans’ taking the stage for the first time. It’s a great time to come and get involved with the Carnival Committee; there’s so much going on, and a lot of fun to be had putting it all together! It’s also a great way to chase away the winter blues...by sitting in front of a roaring fire, with a glass of very reasonably priced beer and having the imagination stretched to all things Fun and Summery!! Ninfield Horticultural Society: Thanks to Rose for the following..! March is a very busy month for the group, with two events. On Monday 20th March at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, the speaker will be Sally Berkley. She is a new speaker to the Horti evenings, but her topic of The Victorian Kitchen Garden should be fascinating. Do go and join everyone for the evening, new members and visitors are always very welcome. On the following Saturday, 25th March, it is the Annual Spring Show, in the Memorial Hall and schedules are available from the Village stores. Do have a look this year- there are handicraft, floral art, and photographic classes, as well as those for wonderful spring blooms. All entries are welcome, especially from newbies! Defibrillators: As usual - these can be found on the front walls of the two public houses in Ninfield and Hooe; Kings Arms and Red Lion respectively.

All Good Wishes!: To Derek and Jane Holdway- They are unfortunately moving away from Hooe, after 30 years, for health reasons, and have bravely decided to hold a Garage Sale, to include Tools and Equipment, on Saturday and Sunday- 11th &12th March, from 2pm at their house, Maple Cottage, Top Road, Hooe!. Do go along and pick up a bargain! All proceeds will be donated, with match funding, to the ongoing roof repairs of St Oswald’s Church. Thanks, love and luck to them both.
