The Matthew Smith painting
The Matthew Smith painting

THIS week we valued a Matthew Smith painting, a British painter born in 1879.

There are quite varied prices at auction for Smith’s still-life paintings.

One recently in Christie’s South Kensington estimated at £10,000 to £15,000 failed to sell while others at Christie’s King Street last July fared better.

One made £30,000 and another £47,000 against estimates of £25,000-£35,000.

Due to the varying prices that Matthew Smith’s still-lifes command at auction, buyers have often been deterred as well as intrigued by his work.

It is difficult to see why some do so well while others do not, which is why his collectors are very selective.

The painting is monogrammed which leads our specialists to believe this piece is a genuine article.

Our specialists valued the piece at: £15,000 to £20,000.
