At least we have heard of Bowie

I write to you in regard to two letters placed in recent editions of the Herald - "Nothing but horrible noise" and "Real live music in town".

I was amazed by the tone of the former - just because the writer doesn't like something doesn't mean that it's "horrible noise".

David Bowie, pictured right in his Ziggy Stardust guise, has sold more than 140 MILLION albums worldwide, a couple over the number I suspect that the writer's favourite acts have sold.

So the noise can't surely be that bad, and people across all generations enjoy his music.

I would never presume to call the Syd Lawrence Orchestra or GMO UK (whoever they are - a Google Search doesn't enlighten unless they are a German progressive house group, which given VJ Douglas' sympathies, I doubt) "horrible noise", even though they aren't my "thing", and I would never pay good money to go and see them.

So a little tolerance could be exercised here - we are a free country with an incredible wide ranging musical tradition, after all.

In response to the latter, I suspect that the reason the theatre was half empty was that the event wasn't advertised properly, rather than a tribute band to one of the most successful career musicians being "horrible noise".

I am regularly in the town and saw nothing about it. Nor did I see anything in the Herald online. Had I seen some promotion, I probably would have gone.

This is a significant problem facing the town - even the recent Nokia Christmas event didn't have a shred of promotion in the town centre, nor, I believe, around Steyne Gardens.

Until the town learns to market itself and its events properly, events will continue to be half empty and people will only learn about them after the fact.

The American car show and bus rally is a good case in point - I did not see so much as a photocopied A4 flier advertising it.

So, Worthing, promote yourself better and don't listen to the "horrible noise" brigade.

Given the demographic of the town, there should be something that everyone likes at least once in a while.
