Campaign was based on lies

Two weeks ago, we had the referendum on membership of the EU, where about 38 per cent of registered voters voted leave, and 34 per cent voted remain.

It would appear that millions more people would be eligible to vote but are not registered, so the true percentage supporting leave was even less.

Since the referendum, the leave campaign has been cancelling just about every policy or promise they made during the campaign, explaining they never actually said what they allowed people to think they had said.

Meanwhile the dire economic consequences which Vote Remain were derided for pointing out have started to happen. If I was taking part in a competition or applying for a job, won, and then told everyone actually I had lied to win, I would be disqualified or fired on the spot. Yet the honourable MPs who made up the Remain campaign now tell us we must respect the result because the voters have spoken. No, they have not.

The referendum was demanded because UKIP claimed the EU was undemocratic and the British public had been lied to. Yet when the public is misled in order to persuade them to vote out, the in campaign think that is fine. Do we conclude that MPs think the one thing MPs are always entitled to do is lie to their voters?

Our local MP Amber Rudd was a stalwart of the Remain campaign. Yet faced with Leave’s admissions that it no longer stands by its claims before the referendum, she refers everyone to a post on her website that we should respect the result. No. In a democracy no-one should accept a result fraudulently arrived at. Any agreeing with this should sign the petition on the parliamentary petitions website which has already received four million signatures for the referendum to be set aside.
