KELLY BROWN: Now I come home at the time I used to go out!

You know you are getting older when you get in from a night out at 9pm '“ and you are happy to be all cosy and warm.

And that was how it was for me at the weekend when I met up with some of my friends for dinner, and was back on the sofa at this newly-appointed pumpkin hour of 9pm.

Oh how times have changed – and the scary thing is you don’t even realise it has happened.

It seems like only yesterday I was getting ready to go out at 9pm.

Almost every weekend was a perfect routine of getting ready to go out slowly, heading out to the pub for about 9pm ish for a couple of hours before dancing the night away and never getting home before midnight. Of course back in those days there were no small people to wake you up at 6am!

But of course your life evolves, your priorities change and sleep becomes ever more precious – especially after surviving those first few sleep-deprived years of after having a child.

So, slowly, without you even noticing it you find yourself in a situation where your nights out have changed and you are arranging to meet at 6pm instead of 9pm.

And you have changed the venue from a noisy to a more sedate one where you can actually talk to your mates and have a proper catch up.

When I say proper catch up I of course mean a couple of hours to compare notes on children, partners and jobs and a few random other topics which BC (that’s before children) you would never had really discussed.

It was with some amusement that my friends pointed out to me how excited I was about making savings on my food shopping bill last week.

How times have changed indeed.

And of course in your twenties your are very much focused on having fun and making memories, while your thirties are much more reflective.

Old stories are shared and new stories involve sharing slightly different kinds of adventures.

Who would have thought you can spend so much of your time discussing trips to get school shoes?

But I digress. Because as I write this all I’m thinking about is how lovely it was to haver the best of both worlds that evening.

Time to catch up with friends and a good night’s sleep. What more can a girl need?
