Where's the bus?

The August Bank Holiday weekend is, for many, a great chance to get away.

For others, it can be an opportunity to explore the local area, or just catch up on a bit of shopping.

But for those living in the Westham, Beachlands and Pevensey Bay areas, this isn't as easy as it sounds. Nor, for that matter, would it be on any weekend '“ there are no buses at all for residents between 4.25 on Friday afternoon and 9.25 on Monday morning. Given that this area is particularly attractive to young families and retired people, who are often those most reliant on public transport to get about, this is a real oversight by the Tory-controlled County Council.

There is hope, though. The local 'Rover' community bus link provides what for many is an essential service - ferrying people between Westham, Beachlands, Pevensey Bay, Stone Cross and Hailsham. Its staff '“ all volunteers - have realised the absurdity of a weekday-only service. Starting on Saturday 4th October, they have decided to run a Saturday service. For the first five weeks, the new service will be free of charge.

I recently spent an afternoon informing Beachlands residents of the service, and it was clear that there is a demand for local buses. One couple, John and Ann McCann, both 74, seemed particularly frustrated that they were stranded at weekends '“ like many, they are without a car and rely on buses to get around. Ann McCann told one volunteer: "We can't visit people in hospital", and when asked what the alternative was, rightly pointed out that"Taxis are expensive."

We'll see whether or not this service gets taken up by residents. But I don't think it should be down to good-hearted volunteers to provide transport to find this out. The cost to the Council of offering a minimal service at weekends is relatively small. I hope they do the right thing and establish this vital bus service soon.
