Green campaigners on the bandwagon

MAY I challenge those who were campaigning to cut carbon emissions in town last week to read into the real facts on global warming ("Campaigners Turn Heat Up", Worthing Herald, May 10).

To put it bluntly, human induced global warming is a global con.

The truth is that the higher temperatures we've had in recent years are due to sunspot activity, not atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2).

When one considers that greenhouse gases make up only 3 per cent of the entire atmosphere, and that gases emitted from human sources make up just 0.3 per cent of the greenhouse effect, it is preposterous to think that, compared to a huge sun, that man could actually alter the world's climate.

The earth's climate has constantly been changing, but history shows no link between atmospheric CO2 levels and higher global temperatures.

Perhaps people who believe CO2 is causing a temperature rise would like to explain, why the earth actually cooled down by 0.2 - 0.3 C between 1940 and 1975, whilst atmospheric CO2 levels were rising rapidly.

Or why, according to weather balloon data, the earth's surface has not been warming as fast as the troposphere, where greenhouse gases trap the sun's energy.

Or what caused the earth to be warm enough for Vikings to settle in Greenland in the Medieval period, long before industrialisation began.

When the global warming theory was first thought of in the 1970's, the scientific community laughed at it.

It became popular due to political circumstances and soon turned into a moneymaking machine for scientists to get research funds.

It has become a power tool for politicians to set new "green" taxes and to take greater control of our lives.

Whilst I don't doubt the sincerity of those who have a green agenda, it gives me great concern to see so many jumping on a bandwagon and toeing the line of the political establishment without looking into the true facts for themselves.
