LETTER: A27 upgrade '“ the 6th option

Highways England have now confirmed that 48,000 vehicles a day use the existing A27 Chichester bypass and that 42 per cent of these are '˜through traffic'.

This figure is higher than most previous figures used and puts the local traffic at a huge disadvantage.

The time has come to reconsider what will best solve the existing congestion problems.

Their brochure and 1uestionnaire outlines five options, none of which, in my opinion, will solve the problems in the short or longer term given the extensive building development programme that will take place in and around our city.

Question A5 in the questionnaire provides a 6th choice – to tick ‘no option’ and then provides a box where ‘any alternative improvements we should consider’.

I urge you to put your thinking caps on and choose this option.

The background work has already been done but our request to reinstate all the original seven options, including both northern bypass options, has been ignored.

I shall be asking for this again as we have never had a satisfactory answer as to why they were dropped.

In my view this is not an alternative to improvements to the existing bypass as both will ultimately be required in the longer term to solve the traffic chaos around Chichester.
