LETTER: Bring back the police station

Mark Purves is so right to be defending the function of community policing on behalf of Midhurst.

When driving for Tandem in the late 1990s I remember going down to Midhurst police station to report on some dangerous driving to the potential detriment of my passengers.

And in this context Fittleworth can give him full solidarity. In the 1970s a fully fledged police station/house was built in Fittleworth.

The resident police officer, PC Apps, knew everyone in the community and the proactive element of this is very important in preventing and detecting crime.

Also some crimes are fast moving and the presence of PC Apps was important in an infamous kidnapping case by car which passed through Fittleworth.

Having built a police station in Fittleworth and having proved its worth the decision to remove it so prematurely is at least worthy of investigation and explanation and making right by reinstating the facility.

Fittleworth, Petworth and Midhurst need to show 100 per cent solidarity on the issue of community policing.
