LETTER: Chronic over population

Every week I open The Observer and read of more planning approvals for housing in and around the Chichester area.

I fully understand the arguments about this strip of land being pinched between the Downs and the Harbour but I firmly believe the case is not of a chronic lack of housing, but of chronic over population.

Unfortunately, very few politicians have the stomach to even raise or discuss this, rather they appear to accept the situation where we are rapidly heading for a national population of say some 70 million rather than engineering a decrease to a long term sustainable level of say 30 million. Just think of the reduced pressure this would have on infrastructure, hospitals and schools etc.

Regrettably the general public appear unable to do anything about this, so on behalf of our grandchildren and the environment it is farewell to this once green and pleasant land.
