LETTER: Find a solution for our athletes

How uplifting to read in last week's County Times about Horsham Blue Star Harrier, Cleo Tomlinson, breaking a 20 year long jump record and achieving UK top ranking for under-13 girls.

Cleo, along with other local athletes, made an impassioned plea at council meeting in December for Horsham District Council to look again to see if the Indoor Athletics facility at Broadbridge Heath (The Tube) could be retained.

Many councillors who spoke were clearly moved by this and whilst enthusiastically supporting the new leisure centre project, requested that this particular aspect be reconsidered.

How depressing to report that no objective analysis into this possibility has subsequently been undertaken, even though the Tube’s demolition creates just a handful of car parking spaces!

As Cleo herself said at the meeting; ‘One day I would love to compete at the Olympics. The Tube is a vital resource to us and makes a huge difference to our performance. Without the Tube where will we be able to train in the winter? One day your children or grandchildren could also benefit by using the Tube and could also lead to them doing many great things’.

Surely no stone should be left unturned in trying to find a way to retain such beneficial, well used and much valued facilities?

HDC and the Athletics National Governing Body (NGB) should stop posturing, ‘get off the fence’ and jointly find a solution for our many local and regional athletes, before it’s too late.
