LETTER: What happened to the obelisk?
I'd like to draw your attention to an item that appeared in the 20 October, 2005, issue of the Chichester Observer, to do with the Duke of Richmond's connection to the obelisk in Wellington Road (I believe it has a photo with it).
Every time I walk along Wellington Road into town I keep thinking I must ask someone what has happened to the stone pillar that used to be there (an old parish marker or the marker for gallows but I know it was considered important).
It had remained in situ all the while Wellington Grange was built but sometime at the end of January early February when the garden landscaping was being done it disappeared.
I tried unsuccessfully to contact (electronically) the Chichester Society. Who should I inform?
Have you or any readers heard anything about it?
