LETTER: Neither ‘abused nor unhappy’in North Horsham

It is interesting to read, yet again, of Mr Coppen’s concern for the ‘abused and unhappy residents of North Horsham’ from his home in Angmering (letters August 13).

He mentions in his correspondence seeing the land West of Ifield developed.

This parcel of land includes the site occupied since 1927 by Ifield Golf Club, of which I am a member.

Ifield Golf Club has a largely ‘blue collar’ membership and is open to all. It is renowned for the quality of the golf course and for its friendly nature in welcoming both new members and visitors to the club with a particular emphasis on the family.

Whilst I have no desire to see the North Horsham area developed further, it does at least have reasonable local road and rail infrastructure if no other suitable areas are available.

Conversely the land West of Ifield will require the addition of substantial road infrastructure to support a 2,500 home development.

With the proposed increase in housing across the South East it is vital that we retain our current leisure and sporting facilities, unless we want future generations to be devoid of recreational facilities.

Finally, as a long term resident of North Horsham, I feel neither ‘abused nor unhappy’ and I rather suspect that I am in the majority.

In the late 1960s I regularly ran cross country around the fields of North Heath Lane and Pondtail Road from Collyer’s School.

This area is now almost totally built upon - has this destroyed Horsham as a market town and how many of these residents are actually protesting about the current proposals?
