Memories of butcher's shop

WITH reference to Mr White's letter (Gazette, January 21) about the butcher's shop on the corner of New Road, I worked as an assistant for Mr Chippington during the time of rationing, when people could only buy meat according to the amount of points they were allowed, which were ticked off or cut out of the books.

In the window he always had on display a little pig. The fridge for the meat was situated in the corner of the shop. Sawdust was always put on the floor to help keep it clean and also soak up any blood.

He also sold groceries which were stored in the cellar below – there was one time when the cellar got flooded and it left behind black sandy sludge which damaged a lot of the storage.

There was an errand boy there named Latter (I don't know his Christian name), who used to take out deliveries on his trades bike.

I left Chippington's for a short spell, then returned to work for a Mr Wilkins, who had taken over the business and then moved it over to across the road, which is now the Tropicana fishing tackle shop.
