Response was inadequate

I WRITE as chairman of CTiB (Churches Together in Bexhill) and as a genuine friend of the De La Warr Pavilion.

The response by the Rother District Council and the Pavilion staff to the letter from the congregation at St Stephen’s Church was incomplete, inadequate and ill-informed.

The De La Warr could have done more to help.

The De La Warr Trustees would be wise to listen more carefully and respond more thoughtfully to CTiB who are continuing in discussion concerning their perceived indifference to the views of the people of Bexhill and Rother District.

The related unending stream of letters to the Bexhill Observer simply reflects the tip of a dangerous, above the water line iceberg of reasonable concern from reasonable people.

The Sunday hymn singing now in place almost 50 years and the issues surrounding it, is but one reflection of a distorted sense of proportionality in the De La Warr’s approach to activity within and around the building.

At the second meeting with the De La Warr Trustees and management, CTiB will be as forthright and friendly as we were at our initial meeting.

This matter will not melt away and warrants a much more positive response towards local concern than has so far has been the case.

A Rother/Bexhill subsidy of £10,000 each week is a large sum of money.
