Rewarding to see pupils' success

WITHOUT wishing to conduct a protracted exchange of words with Mark Williams through our local newspaper, I would like to point out to him that I have nothing but admiration for the achievements of LCS students, past and present, many of whom I know personally through my work in primary schools.

Indeed, I have been involved in several LCS initiatives over the years through primary/secondary liaison and it has been very rewarding to follow the successes of former pupils.

Previous LCS head teachers, Geoff Smith and Jayne Wilson, both introduced new and innovative ideas to ensure the school and it students attained higher standards and results year on year. The move to academy status is the next step in that progression.

I note that Mark Williams writes "on behalf of past pupils, teachers and parents of Littlehampton Community School" but I am aware of many who do not hold with his views. My son is a teacher at a school where, heaven forbid, the staff are expected to maintain high dress codes, too!

However, I am delighted that Mr Williams' children achieved so well at top universities and what a wonderful time they must have socialising with all those talented, successful and academic friends.

I agree that there is nothing smart about a blazer three sizes too big but most of the students I have seen are wearing blazers that fit perfectly. I assume parents wouldn't buy ordinary clothes three sizes too big for their children (even parents of fashion-conscious daughters), so why would they do so with school uniforms?

And finally, Mark Williams, I do know of a bank with a bank manager who, incidentally, is always smartly dressed.

Ah well, I'm off on my holidays. Now...where did I put that yellow cardigan and purple wet suit?
