The only option for opposition

AS the dust begins to settle after the general election which produced an inconclusive result, there must be a lot of anti-Conservative voters out there wondering just what the hell has happened.

Around the country some 10.5m people voted for the Conservatives, as against over 18m who did not. Yet we now have the spectacle of the new "ConDem" coalition already embarking on the process of savage public spending cuts, thereby putting people`s jobs and the economic recovery in jeopardy, at the same time as gerrymandering the rules governing a potential dissolution of Parliament.

I know there are many local Liberal Democrat voters and activists who feel gutted and betrayed. They did not vote or work hard just to prop up the Tories, which is what has now happened.

But despair not – there is an alternative. This is to join with the Labour Party in what will now be the only real opposition to the ConDems.

They will be very welcome to help shape the journey of formulating and moulding a powerful, radical, green and progressive alternative, both locally and nationally, as the prelude to creating a credible future centre-left government.

We look forward to working with you and thank most warmly those people locally who voted for Labour candidate Michael Jones.
