What does Bexhill actually mean?

I used to visit the elderly, many until they died. It was interesting hearing about Bexhill many decades ago.

One lady came to Bexhill just before World War 2. She remembered many things that opened my mind.

Like the name Bexhill not meaning ‘windy hill.’ The first part, said in modern times to mean ‘windy’ originally was known to mean ‘happy’.

The second part refers to the first, and is not anything physical but means ‘Great.’ So our town name originally meant ‘Great Happiness.’
