Who is fighting for Arundel bypass?

IT seems that councillor Paul Dendle may have been right to express concern at the county council's position on the Arundel bypass (Gazette letters, March 11).

Councillor Derek Whittington (Gazette letters, April 1) makes it clear that "a full bypass is one of the schemes being considered".

Are we supposed to feel reassured by this?

If a full bypass is only one of the schemes being considered then surely, the question is, what are the other schemes now being put forward by the county council?

Mr Whittington's position seems a long way from the county council's Structure Plan position of "the county council considers that anything short of a full bypass at Arundel, including a new river crossing, would not address the problem of through traffic".

The government could consider the county council's willingness to consider other schemes as a signal that it is now willing to accept a lesser solution.

It would also be interesting to know where Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert now stands on this issue, since his successful campaign against the Ford Eco-Town proposals – has his position changed too?

His recently distributed "Westminster Report" offers nothing more encouraging than that he has "spoken in Parliamentary debates to raise local concerns over issues such as the A27".

We would expect nothing less.

The Arundel bypass is the single most important issue for Arun's local economy and so it is vital that we (and government) receive some form of assurance that local Conservatives remain committed to it.

Will Mr Herbert's election literature contain a clear and unequivocal commitment to an Arundel bypass? And Mr Gibb's, too? We must all read their words very, very carefully!
