STUART McGINLEY: Baking and DIY – what could possibly go wrong?

I’ve had a few days off recently and even though I always intend to lounge around in the garden and do nothing, I just can’t sit still for long and so I start looking for things to do.

Last week I decided to put up a new mirror but as it’s so heavy it requires a hole to be drilled in the wall, I don’t even have a drill so that gives you an idea of my DIY experience.

Reluctantly my Spirit FM colleague Ian Crouch lent me his drill and explained how it works etc, and he even lent me a spirit level as some skill was involved to ensure the mirror was hanging straight. I wasn’t too confident of success… me putting up a heavy mirror? What could possibly go wrong?

Well surprisingly nothing, and yes it’s even hanging straight. Spurred on by this success,
I even changed a kitchen light fitting this
week and didn’t electrocute myself (this is where I must say only do this if you know what you are doing) but being honest, I had done this before.

I’ve actually started baking, partially inspired after finding a recipe on the internet and since mentioning it in my radio show, I have had a few people asking for the recipe, so in a first for this column, here goes!

Ingredients (serves eight or four if you like BIG portions like me):

350g Nutella, 2 large eggs, 65g self-raising flour, 20cm x 20cm baking tray

Preheat oven to 180’C – Gas mark 4

Grease your baking tray, mix all the ingredients together until smooth, pour into baking tray and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. A few minutes less if you have a fan oven

Once ready, leave to cool before cutting into squares, then eat.

Taste lovely with ice cream or custard, yum! So there you have it, mirrors, kitchen lights and now Brownies, whatever will I get up to next week?

Oh and by the way, if you are having a go at putting something up on the wall, your smartphone has a spirit level built in, perhaps the next ones will have built-in drills, too?
