STUART MCGINLEY: The royals do not have the only new arrival

Well we’ve all been waiting for some exciting news of a new arrival recently… no, not that one, I mean our new drive-time presenter at Spirit FM!

I mean our new drive-time presenter at Spirit FM!

Her name is Kate Goddard and this week she’s been in training for her new role at the station, learning all the important stuff like where to find the teabags and of course what biscuits she needs to bring in every day!

Kate’s been working in the entertainment industry for 12 years and started her career travelling the world as deputy cruise director for Princess Cruises and more recently has worked as a breakfast co-host on other stations in the south of England.

Her passion has always been for radio and she’s excited to be joining Spirit FM so please make her feel very welcome next week.

So after weeks and months of kissing babies, rolled-up sleeves and soundbites, we’ve finally arrived at polling day.

Among all the facts, polls, manifestos and speeches, something I remembered most about this campaign was the number of people who won’t be voting.

I was staggered at the fact that around seven million people in the UK who are eligible to vote hadn’t registered; this seems such a shame when you consider how many lives were lost in previous conflicts to give us the freedom of a democracy that we enjoy today.

Bearing that in mind, it’s a good time to mention that tomorrow, Friday, May 8 is Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).

This anniversary marks the 70th anniversary since the end of the second world war in Europe, although it’s worth remembering the conflict did continue in Japan for a few more months. On May 8, 1945, the defeat of Germany by allied forces was marked with a bank holiday and more than one million people celebrated on the streets of cities, towns and villages across the UK.

These anniversaries are always a poignant and all-too-painful reminder of the huge loss of life in all wars, past and present.

I’m very proud to say that Spirit FM will be observing a two-minute silence at 3pm on Friday and remembering those brave servicemen and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
