FINE words from our prime minister on his recent visit to Afghanistan on the value the government places on the men and women who serve in our military.

The reality locally hardly reflects these aspirations to uphold and enhance a military covenant. The treatment of military families living in the MOD housing in the former Roussillon Barracks appears Scrooge-like and mean.

Christmas 2010 saw the redundant Chapel Building decorated and being used by the service families living here as their community centre. This year the building stands empty after the MOD put the building up for disposal in March.

The children’s playground, the tennis courts and the all-weather basketball area has also been

added to the areas for sale for re-development.

Service families accommodated in Chichester are disadvantaged in having to live at a distance from the place of work and associated regimental support and facilities. They have to put up with the

noise and dust from the large re-development on their doorstep.

We are all aware of the need for savings in the military budget but is the sale of families facilities the way forward and how can it be justified against the claims of honouring the military covenant? I have written twice about this local situation to our MP Andrew Tyrie and have not received a reply or acknowledgement.
